D.A.V. Thrift Store

Just five blocks west of the Iowa State Fair grounds the DAV Thrift Store is conveniently located at 2627 E. University Avenue , Des Moines , Iowa 50317.
With 20,000 sq ft of floor space with at least 40,000 items on the floor at any given time.  We also put 3,000 to 5,000 items out fresh daily. This means most everything on the sales floor is  new each week.

Proceeds from sales go to D.A.V. Chapters 20 and 53 (see www.daviowa.org ) to assist veterans in the Des Moines area, and to support the programs of the Disabled American Veterans throughout the State of Iowa.  Some of these include:

  • Transportation of veterans from their homes throughout central Iowa to the Des Moines VA Hospital and back home. To do this we pay the salaries of (3) Hospital Service Coordinators (HSCs) to make the necessary arrangements for transportation of these veterans.
  • From time to time we provide TVs , and cookies, popcorn, coffee, and coffee carts; pens, paper, envelopes, stamps; and reading and writing materials for lounges and waiting rooms.
  • We fund in-hospital activities that include picnics, parties, and other services through VA Volunteer Services; toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shaving articles; phone cards and other necessary items when veterans unexpectedly require hospitalization; and we occasionally purchase much needed hospital equipment for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
  • We also provide funds for annual scholarships to veterans and/or their dependents, and we buy U.S. Bonds for an annual studentsí essay contest.  Clothing items are also provided to veterans when such is recommended management, or by our DAV office in the Federal Building in downtown Des Moines.

As you can see, the DAV Thrift Store and the local DAV Chapters, actively support disabled veterans here in the central Iowa area.
